Although it might not feel like there is anything wrong with your bike, it is vital to do regular checks to make sure everything is running smoothly and to avoid surprises when you least expect it.
Procedures involved:
- Bolts tightened to correct torque: Helps avoid loose ends OR having over-tightened bolts that may cause serious damage to the frame or component.
- Brake alignment:
- V-Brakes: Make sure the pads are not rubbing, detect damage on the rims.
- Disk Brakes: Make sure callipers and disks are aligned to avoid rubbing.
- Chain Measuring: Check the stretch in the chain and make sure it doesn’t run high on the tooth, eventually causing the chain to skip and the wear of the cassette. The same goes for having the proper length of chain for your drive train.
- Chain lubrication: A must to reduce the wear between pins and bushings, flush out dirt and ensure a smooth engagement with the sprocket.
- Derailleur adjustments: Ensure the smoothness of speed changes and avoid chain drops.
- Tire & Wheels check: Ensure that tube & tires sit correctly on the rim, assess wear and repair punctures.
